The site includes a series of coastal lakes. The largest one, lake Vistonida is half brackish - half freshwater and has inflow from the rivers Konsyfos and Komsatos. On the other hand, the lagoons that are Mitrikou, Valtos, Elos, Ptelea, Alyki, Karatza, Xirolimni, Lafri-Lafrouda and Porto lagos are saline. Lake Messi and Lafri-Lafrouda have salinas (Nea Kessani). There are different biotopes: large reedbeds all around, Tamarix scrubs (greatest of Greece), salt marshes, dunes, bordering macchia hills and also agricultural cultivation extending close to the wetland biotopes plain and a bordering by tertiary hills. In the north tertiary Rodopi mountains are raised. There is also an alluvial Delta.

QUALITY

The ten wetlands under consideration either seem as one ecological unit and a great wetland complex, or considered each one separately still have a great ecological value for Greece and Europe. Remarkable is their diversity in biotopes and wildlife species, as well as the important bird populations existing here. Several bird species have their national strong holds here. Moreover, the total greek and european populations of others, breed in those wetlands, that are protected by Ramsar Convention. They also consist IUCN Directory site and are classified as Type I Bird site. The reference on the Triturus cristatus is about the subspecies karelini (Strauch 1870). Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of the mammal Vulpes vulpes which is referred to Corine biotopes project 1988. Technical Handbook vol.1.
Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of 7 important taxa. Among them, 4 taxa (Groenlandia densa, Oenanthe tenuifolia, Salvinia natans,Trapa natans) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 2 taxa (Fraxinus angustifolia,Leymus racemosus ssp. sabulosus) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece and one taxon (Pancratium maritimum) is seriously endangered by the human activities on the coast.

VULNERABILITY

The destruction of wetland habitats with the richness and diversity described, had also a very serious impact on the raptor fauna of the bordering areas in north of the wetlands. The importance of the site as a wintering area for waterfowl is reduced by hunting even though shooting is prohibited in parts of the area. Vistonis along with Mitrikou lake and other lagoons have been adversely affected by pollution from industrial, agricultural and domestic sources as well as urban development. Wet meadows and riparian wood around lake Vistonis and Mitrikou are seriously threatened by reclamation plans. Large scale extraction of fresh water has caused increasing salinisation.
